Headshot Wardrobe & Grooming Tips
-
Stick to Solid Colors – Solid colors always work best. Solid black, gray, blue, or white tops always photograph well. But if you live on the more adventurous side, bring a colorful jacket or top.
-
Jackets Look Great – If wearing a jacket, choose a solid color. A light or white shirt underneath creates a clean, classy look.
-
Avoid Tiny Patterns in Jackets or Shirts – patterns in photographs occur when fine, repetitive fabric patterns interact with the camera’s digital sensor, creating wavy or distorted effects. Smooth, non-textured fabrics are the safest choice.
-
Wear Clothes That Fit Properly – A great fit makes all the difference! Avoid anything too tight or too loose to keep your look sharp and professional.
-
The best neckline for headshots is usually one that is simple and classic, such as a V-neck or scoop neck. Avoid high neck tops. If in doubt, look at other women who are more senior in position in the sector you work for more ideas.
-
Watch Out for Wrinkles – Cameras pick up everything, including clothing wrinkles. A quick press or steam will keep you looking well-groomed.
-
Check for Lint & Pet Hair – Dark fabrics love lint and pet hair—do a final check before your session.
-
Go Easy on Accessories – Simple jewelry and a classic watch add just the right touch without stealing the spotlight.
-
Tidy Up That Tie – If you’re wearing a jacket and tie, take care that it’s knotted properly for a crisp and clean look look. Bring a few extra ties just for options, too.
-
Eyeglasses – should be clean of smears and specks.
-
Grooming Matters (especially for the men!) If you’re clean-shaven, make sure to shave before your session. If you have facial hair, a light trim keeps it looking neat. And yes, don’t forget to check for nose, ear and stray eyebrow hair. It’s a small detail that makes a big difference!
