Headshot Tips

What types of headshots do you offer?

We offer professional headshots for individuals, corporate teams, and large group events. Sessions can be done in-studio, on-location at your office, or at events with an efficient headshot station setup.

What is the difference between a traditional headshot and an environmental headshot?

A traditional headshot focuses solely on the subject’s face and shoulders against a neutral background, while an environmental headshot incorporates the subject’s work environment or surroundings to provide additional context and depth.

How often should I update my headshot?

You should update your headshot as often as necessary to keep it current and representative of your current appearance. This could mean updating it every year or every two years, depending on the industry or purpose of the headshot. Changing hair style, or changing companies will mean changing your headshot.

What happens during my photo shoot?

During the photo shoot, the photographer will guide you through various poses and expressions to capture a range of images. They will also adjust lighting and backgrounds as necessary and may offer feedback or direction on hair, makeup, or clothing.

How many outfits should I bring to my headshot session?

The number of outfits you should bring to your headshot session depends on the photographer’s policies, your package inclusions and the intended use of the photos. Typically, 2 or so outfits are recommended to provide variety and options for different styles or looks. Or simply a photo with a jacket on and one without a jacket. The "Headshot Tips" page will give you more suggestions.

Do you travel to offices or events?

Yes, we offer on-site headshot sessions for teams and large events. I bring professional lighting and a backdrop for a seamless experience. For projects requiring travel outside of the Rochester, NY area, additional fees for travel time, mileage, accommodation, meals, and other necessary expenses will apply. Travel expenses will be estimated in the project quote and adjusted based on actual costs. Clients may choose to handle travel arrangements directly or approve costs coordinated by TrueYou Headshots. Any unforeseen expenses will be communicated for prior approval.

What size space do you need to setup at my office?

  • A minimum of 12’x12’ room with a 10-11' ceiling, but larger (20'x20') is always better. If a conference room is being considered, any large table will need to be moved to one side as well as all chairs removed from the room.

What do you need from us to setup in our offices?

  • We will need access to reliable WiFi service.

  • Small tables (1-2) to use for participant sign-in and touch up mirror station.

  • Access to wall power for lights and laptop.

What type of backgrounds do you offer?

  • The most popular backgrounds are white, gray and black.

  • A textured backdrop in either neutrals or shades of color are available.

  • As another option, we can offer specific colors that work with your brand.

  • Out-of-focus office environments (or other appropriate images) can be composited with the headshots during the retouching process, too.

How do I book a session?

You can book an individual or team session through the “Headshot Photo Session Request” form. For large groups, please contact us directly to discuss your needs and schedule.

What are your pricing options?

Pricing depends on the type of session, the number of people, and any additional services like retouching or multiple looks. The individual, team and event headshots have basic pricing on their respective pages. Contact us for a custom quote based on your team or event needs.

What are the payment terms?

We require ½ deposit to secure the date and time. The remaining payment is due 2 days prior to the headshot session unless other payment arrangements have been made.

Why is a deposit required?

More than just a fee, a deposit reflects a client’s commitment, acknowledges the value of time, and sets the foundation for a great experience for both parties.

How do I pay for my session?

The "Pay Now" link found in the header and footer is a convenient way to handle payment with credit card, Apple Pay or Venmo.

Do I own the images or the copyright?

According to U.S. Law, the person who photographs the image is the owner of the image, whether it’s a professional photographer, or your grandmother who’s terrible with her smartphone camera. Similar to buying an album from an artist, you own a copy of the images, but you don’t own the copyright allowing broad distribution and resale of the images. These come with a basic license to keep costs affordable to the client, allowing any personal use you’d like. This is usually never an issue with headshots, unless you want to sell or redistribute to third parties in ways that cuts income from the photographer.

The "Terms of Service" page has some more details about this.

FOR INDIVIDUALS

How long does a headshot session take?

Individual sessions typically last 15-45 minutes, depending on outfit changes and package selection.

What should I wear for my headshot?

Neutral, solid colors work best. Avoid busy patterns and overly bright colors. Bring a few options to choose from. Some more helpful ideas on wardrobe can be found on the "Headshot Tips" page.

Can I see the photos during the session?

For individual or team headshots, we offer real-time previews so you can adjust your pose or expression as needed. For large event headshots, there probably won’t be time for the subject to review their photos at the session. We will send all the photos taken in a private gallery immediately after the session so each person can select their favorite.

How soon will I receive my photos?

Standard delivery is 3-5 business days. Expedited delivery is available upon request.

FOR TEAMS & CORPORATE SESSIONS

How long does a corporate headshot session take?

On average, 5-10 minutes per person, depending on the package. We can adjust based on your team’s schedule.

Do you provide consistent lighting and background for all employees?

Yes! We ensure a uniform look for all headshots, matching your company’s brand guidelines.

What if an employee is unavailable on the scheduled day?

We offer rescheduling options and makeup sessions at my studio or during another company visit.

Can we choose a specific backdrop?

Yes! We offer a variety of backdrop colors or can match your office environment for a modern look.

FOR LARGE GROUP EVENTS

How many people can you accommodate at an event?

Using one headshot booth, we can photograph 160+ people for an 8 hr. day (20/hour) with an efficient, streamlined process. More people can be accommodated by adding a second headshot booth if needed.

Do you provide instant photo selection at events?

We offer same-day image selection via a private online gallery sent to the individual's cell phone. Individuals will be able to select additional specific retouching for a charge if they desire. Retouched images are delivered within 3-5 business days.

Can you provide branding or sponsor logos on the photos?

Absolutely! We can add your company’s logo or event branding to the final images as well as a custom slideshow that plays at the headshot booth.
